MSN Explorer

Exporting (creating) a bookmark.htm file:

1: Create a new folder on your desktop. Name it anything you want.
I'm naming it "MyFavs" for this how-to.

2: Download this small zip file: MsnFav.zip

3: Extract the contents (four files) to MyFavs.

4: Now you need to locate your MSN favorites.xml file.

    To do this go: Start
My Computer
Local Disc (C:)
Documents and Settings
Your User Name folder

At this point, you need to access hidden files, so you need to un-hide them.
Click on "Tools", "Folder Options", then select the View tab.
Check "Show Hidden Files and Folders"
Un-check "Hide Protected Operating System Files"
Click "apply" and close the options box.
Application Data
MSN6
UserData
folder named with long string of letters and numbers (see Note #1 below)
favorites.xml

5: Right-click over favorites.xml and choose "Copy".

6: Go back to MyFavs, right-click over any empty area and choose "Paste".
NOTE: Be sure to choose "Paste" and not "Paste Shortcut".

7: Open Folder Options again and re-hide hidden/protected files so you don't forget to do it later.

8: In MyFavs, double-click msnfav.vbs to execute the script.
    This generates your bookmark.html file.

To verify that the file was generated correctly, right-click on it and choose "Open With" - "Internet Explorer". What you see should look like this sample. If the page is blank, delete it and re-execute the script. I don't know why, but sometimes it won't execute correctly the first (or second or third) time. If for some reason you keep getting a blank page, open the readme.txt file (one of the four files in the zip you extracted) for suggestions on what to try. Also, if the file is not being generated at all, you may have a security program preventing the script from running, so try disabling that if you do.

The bookmark.htm file of your MSN Favorites generated by this script can then be used the same way as any other bookmark.html file. (See Previous Page.)

Additional Notes:
1) In step #4 when you open the UserData folder, there will be one folder with long string name for each MSN User you have.
To find which folder belongs to which User:
With the view style of the User Data folder set to "Thumbnails" you will see the custom image used for each User on that User's folder. View Sceenshot
If you don't see the Users' images this way, open each folder; you will see them inside the opened folder. If for some reason you still aren't seeing the images, or if your Users are using the same image, open the localsettings.xml file of each folder. Scroll down to the third block of info (serverID=user) and you will see the User's name, among other info.

2) The .zip file can be deleted and the MyFavs folder you created with the extracted contents in it can be moved & saved to any location you wish. Then anytime you want to create an updated bookmark file of your MSN favs, follow steps 4-8.
